Weigh Down Workshop is a long-standing program used in many churches and by people around the globe. The approach is very accessible: food is here to enjoy and to serve your wellness not to control you. The key is learning to change your relationship with food. How do you do this? Improve your relationship with God and learn to tell the difference between eating and actually being hungry.

So many problems with food come back to relationships that are out of alignment. Frequently these problems aren’t anyone’s fault; they are natural result of growing up. Ever think about how many children are taught to be quiet in church by eating cereal? This is an example of how that relationship can get mis-wired in our minds and emotions. Weigh Down is about re-learning appropriate food relationship patterns. Isreal’s journey out of Egypt is the parallel example used to describe the journey.

Just like the Israelites had to go through many changes, the same thing happens when you change basic behavior such as eating. It’s common to face questions on this journey: What’s WRONG with this picture if God made me? Is it my fault? God’s fault? I mean, he gave me these genetics…where and how do I tell the difference between my mistakes and how things just are?

The key is loving something more than you love food. In the Weigh Down program this is loving God and in turn your self as the path to stopping your negative food behaviors. I really like the positive perspective this provides: you’re changing habits. You’re not working on control or good vs. bad foods. “God has never asked anyone to eat food off of a list, to count fat exchanges, or to take an appetite suppressant,” says Gwen Shamblin who created the program. Your energy is better spent on adoration, love, and worship. This allows you to learn what it is to feel full based on stomach reality, not an emotional reality that may be a warped food relationship.

The Weigh Down program can be accessed through books, classes, online and through seminars. You can even start the program at your church or with a group of other individuals.
